Welcome to My Office by buckweiser Welcome to My Office by buckweiser
LCDR Rainbow Dash smiles for the camera as she checks on her jet's displays.

Premise and concept is loosely taken from totallynotabronyFIM's fanfic Wings of Gold.

A little background info though: Before I turned this drawing into what you see, it used to be a mere concept sketch I made back in early 2012. For a while it sat in my portfolio, waiting for the time I'd revisit it. When I read Wings in mid-2013, I remembered the sketch I made way back and decided to try my hand at it again. Between schoolyears, I managed to work on it, and the result is this, after more or less two years of development :P

The nose number 201 signifies she's second in command of the second squadron, if memory serves. Pretty spiff.

No, 201 is the CO's aircraft in the air wing's second fighter (or strike-fighter) squadron. 202 would belong to the squadron's Executive Officer and 200 would be the CAG Bird.

I can tell what ship she's on, the USS George Washington stationed at fleet base Yokosuka Japan, but what squadron I wonder?

I know that ship, I used to be stationed on one of the destroyers that is also homeported at Yokosuka along with the George Washington (or G-Dub, as sailors like to call her).  Most of her strike fighter squadrons fly the Super Hornet nowadays, 3 with the F/A-18E (VFA-115 "Eagles", VFA-27 "Royal Maces" and VFA-195 "Dambusters") and one with the F/A-18F (VFA-102 "Diamondbacks").  However, I have seen F/A-18Cs of VFA-192 "Golden Dragons" on her as well, so that must be the squadron that Dash flies with here.  In fact, the F/A-18 in front of the LSO station is one of VFA-192's according to the tail emblem, so it's safe to say that it's one of Dash's squadron-mates.  Also (fun fact), I can see the flight deck of one of the destroyers of her strike group in the background.  Knowing the ships that are stationed there, I can guess with some certainty which one it is.  (The one I was on was USS Lassen, a Flight IIA destroyer, which is the variant with the helo hangars.)

Holy level of detail batman! That's amazing! As an avid fan Ace Combat, (particularly Six) I approve.
One thought just keeps going through my head. As Rainbow Dash turn back to the cockpit she sits for a moment and yells: "How the buck do I fly this thing with hooves?!!"
Great work though. I just came across your page and I think you got an instant watch.

Love this! Did not realize 18's were "center stick"! F-16's are  "side stick" for G related reasons (rather comfortable during maintenance runs). My old A-10's were center stick too (full cabled floor mount) ....oh the tricks that got played on us trying to run the dang things..(Crew chief would grab the horizontal surface and slam it upwards sending the stick into delicate areas! .....OOOOOFFF!)

I remember that story. It was an entertaining read. I need to catch up with his story where she becomes an astronaut though.

By the way, I believe in the story, he mentions something about claws, which is the only way RD is able to maneuver her plane because she has no hands.

Well I was trying to make a joke, because if you see a black and yellow lever in a plane, it's the eject trigger.

:icontwistedkestrel:

That one in particular actually jettisons the canopy
Reply
:iconidislikecake:
idislikecake Featured By Owner Jun 10, 2014  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Would that mean that if you pull the eject lever before you jettison the canopy, will you smash into the top? Or is there a safety mechanism?
Reply
:icontwistedkestrel:
TwistedKestrel Featured By Owner Jun 10, 2014
Good question... I believe pulling the eject handle (located on the seat) fires the canopy first, then after a short delay fires the seat.
Reply
:iconusnavypro:
USNAVYPRO Featured By Owner Aug 27, 2014
It does, the canopy jettison lever's mainly used for crash-landings so that the pilot could escape from the aircraft.  A good example of this is seen at the end of Ace Combat: Assault Horizon's fifth campaign mission, "Blue On Blue."
